French

Bonjour!

The aim of Modern Foreign Language teaching is to enable children to learn about and foster an interest in another language and culture other than their own. This will enable them to develop personal qualities, skills, knowledge and understanding and make a major contribution to their communication and literacy skills.  The focus language taught in our school is French!

Our purpose is to teach French mainly through using a well structured scheme and the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages.

To promote skills such as:

  • becoming increasingly familiar with the sounds and written form of French
  • developing the use of a language and language learning skills
  • understanding and communicating
  • making comparisons between French and English
  • hearing and reading skills
  • expression in speech and writing
  • using correct pronunciation and grammar
  • memorising words
  • interpreting meaning

To promote values and attitudes such as:

  • positive attitudes towards foreign language learning and thus lay the foundations for future study
  • increased cultural awareness by learning about different countries and their peoples
  • stimulating and encouraging children’s curiosity about language
  • awareness that a language has structure and that it can differ from one language to another
  • increased confidence and competence to understand what they hear and read and to express themselves in speech and writing
Here is some of the work that year 3 and 4 have created, on the themes of 'Greetings' and 'Les Animaux'.
