5H Mrs Hunton

Welcome to Class 5H

Welcome to our exciting class page. Here you'll be able to find links to work that we do in school and photographs of all the fun we've been having.

This term our topic is...
Trouble at the Tower

This term our theme is ‘Trouble at the Tower.' We will be studying the history of York focusing on Clifford's Tower.  As port of our skilled based curriculum, we will be considering the following questions:

Who built Clifford's Tower and why?

Why was Clifford's Tower built at this location?

How has Clifford's Tower changed over time?

Would a catapult be an effective weapon to take over Clifford's Tower?

Can we use music to create an atmosphere?

How has York changed since Clifford's Tower was built?

Furthermore, in science we will be studying 'Properties and Changes of Materials.'

This term we will be asking you to complete three tasks of your choosing before half term and another three before the Christmas holidays. We've got many fun and exciting activities for you to try. If you lose the homework grid, you can get a copy from the link below.

In addition to topic homework, you will be given a piece of maths homework once a fortnight. In year 5 we will give out homework on a Friday to be completed and returned by the following Friday.  Here are a list of dates that maths homework will be given out this half term:

PE and Games
Our timetabled PE and games days are a Monday and Friday.  This term we will be doing gymnastics in our PE lessons and swimming in our games sessions.

It's a good idea to have both your indoor and outdoor kits in school all week as we might find time to do PE on other days too.

Outdoor PE Kit required
White polo T-Shirt
Dark tracksuit bottoms and jumper (no logos)
Trainers or football boots (if already owned)
Shin pads (if already owned)
No jewellery
Long hair tied up

Indoor PE Kit
White polo T-Shirt
Black/blue shorts (no logos)
Black plimsolls
No jewellery
Long hair tied up

Please note, it is important that your child has separate indoor PE shoes to help us to look after our hall floor.

We will be studying a variety of faiths from different cultures throughout the year and hope to have visitors to speak to the children. This term we will be looking at why people believe in a God or Gods.

High 5
Read at home a minimum of five times per week, then get it written in your planner with an adult's signature and you will be awarded a 'High 5.' Come on 5H, let's go for it!  Furthermore, for every time you read at home you will move along our 'Race to Read' leader board.  When everyone in the class has read 10 times at home we will get a class reward.

Times Tables

It's important to get your knowledge of times tables really secure, with instant recall of the facts up to at least 12 x 12. This is because future maths skills build on this knowledge, and without it, you will struggle later on. It's a good idea to keep practising from time to time too, because if you don't use it you might lose it. Below, I have included a link to 'TTRockstars,' which is a times tables game that we play in class and the children love it!
