Welcome to Year 3!
As part of our whole school Big Idea of ‘Fragile Earth’, Year 3’s Autumn topic is … Caring for our Community! As part of this topic we will be investigating how Acomb has changed over time and the impact of this on the environment, look at our local area and what we can do to improve it and visit Fish Ponds Woods to see what we can do to preserve it for the future.
We really enjoyed our Launch day! We found lots of different leaves to identify different trees, went on a trip to Fish Pond Woods, made gorgeous face mask with Lush and tried out lots of exciting and different bikes with Get Cycling.
We will be exploring how the geography of our local area has changed over time and how this has impacted on the environment.
We will also be looking at the human impact of the area around us and what we can do to improve any negative effects.
Art & DT
In Art, we will be creating a sculpture using recycled materials.
In DT, we will be creating mats that can be used for sitting on out of recycled plastic bags.
In History, we will be looking at how Acomb has changed and developed over time – learning map skills to help us to compare these changes.
We will be exploring Animals this term in Science.
We will be investigating what humans and animals need to survive and looking at our bodies to see how we move.
We will study the book ‘Somebody swallowed Stanley’ by Sarah Roberts. This will provide us with opportunities to explore what effects plastics are having on our oceans and what we can do to improve this.
We will be investigating a range of musical instruments and how they are made, in order to make one of our own.
PE and Games
This term PE & Games will be on a Monday and Friday afternoons.
All of the children's kit is kept in school but will be sent home with your child at the end of each half term. We will provide shorts and T-shirts but please send in plimsols to add to this. If you would like to send them warmer kit for outdoor games, this is fine. Please make sure it is washed and returned for the start of the new half term.
The children will be learning skills in dance team building and swimming.
At Carr Junior School, we encourage the children to read everyday. Every morning, the children's planners are checked to see if they have read and if they have read, they get to move up on our Reading Chart. Once all of the children in the class have reached 10, they get a reward. At the end of each half term, the class teacher will count up how many times your child has read and depending how many times they have read, they will get to choose a prize!
These will be sent home every Friday with your child, lending them the opportunity to practise at home daily in
preparation for the weekly spelling test on a Thursday afternoon.
TT Rockstars is used in Year 3 for the children to practice their timestables. This online system enables children to practise their timetables by completing online maths games to develop their knowledge and speed of solving time tables problems. Children have passwords in the front of their planners for them to use at home We ask, if possible, for children to practice at home, at least 3 times a week, for around 10 minutes each time. If your child can't access this at home, they can attend the TT Rockstars Common Room on any lunch time. In school, we complete a paper test 3 times a week related to the questions on TT Rockstars.
If your child would like to do some homework, they can choose any activity on the homework grid. This however is not compulsory. If your childs does an activity, they can bring it into school to share with their class and teacher.
Maths homework is set every other week on a Friday. Your child is expected to complete this homework and return it to their class teacher by the following week. Children will get a reward for completing their homework.
If you have any questions regarding any homework please don't hesitate to ask us.
