Pupil Premium

Pupil Premium

Carr Junior recognises that all pupils regardless of their background should have equal access to a curriculum which will enable them to reach their potential. The pupil premium is a Government initiative that targets extra money to pupils from deprived backgrounds, which research shows underachieve compared to their peers.

The Pupil Premium is allocated to schools and it is for schools to decide how the funding will be spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility.

Children who are eligible include:

  • Pupils who have been registered for Free School Meals (FSM) at any point in the last six years
  • Children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months and Children who have been Adopted from Care
  • Children of armed services personnel.

The Government do not dictate how schools should spend this money, but are clear that schools will need to employ the strategies that they know will support these pupils to increase their attainment, and ‘narrow the gap’ between their attainment and the attainment of other pupils.
